The idea
Built around the grammar.
Icelandic’s difficulty is its grammar: four cases, three genders, words that change shape in almost every sentence. Skip it and you stay stuck at phrases. This course teaches it from the first lesson: one path of 15 units from Halló to hobbies, each ending in a conversation you can have.

What’s in the beta, and what do you want from me?
Units 1–6, complete: greetings, introducing yourself, where you’re from, your family, numbers and prices, food, and ordering at a café. Every feature is in there, from inflection tables to audio to spaced repetition. It’s pre-release software, so expect rough edges. Two things help. Tell us where you got confused, where a word felt wrong, and where you stopped: every exercise has a flag button, TestFlight has a feedback button, and email always works. And tell us what the app should become: feature requests, design feedback, ideas for the roadmap. Every message gets read, and the beta shapes what gets built next.
How does TestFlight work?
TestFlight is Apple’s free app for trying pre-release apps. Leave your email, confirm it, and a second email with the TestFlight link follows right after. Install TestFlight from the App Store, open the link, and the app installs like any other. New builds update in place, and the App Store version replaces the beta when it launches.
Is the free part really free forever?
Yes. Units 1–3 are free permanently, with every feature: full inflection tables, audio, spaced repetition. Not a trial, no card required. During the beta there is nothing to pay for at all. At launch, a subscription unlocks Units 4–15 and future expansions.
How is this different from other Icelandic apps?
It teaches the grammar. Every word comes with its complete inflection table and audio for every form, and when you use the wrong case the app tells you which one you needed and why. In a language where hundur, hund, hundi and hunds are all ‘dog’, the grammar is the course.
What level will I reach? What about the citizenship exam?
The launch course takes you from zero to CEFR A1: conversations like introducing yourself, shopping, ordering, directions and small talk. The Icelandic citizenship exam requires roughly A2. An A2 course with a citizenship-exam track comes next, then B1.
Do I need an account? Does it work offline?
No. The app has no account and nothing to sign up for. Lessons, audio, inflection tables and your progress are on your iPhone, and the course works offline; speaking exercises are the exception, they need a connection. Your progress stays on your device (export and import as backup are on the way). At launch, the subscription ties to your Apple ID. The beta list is just your email for the TestFlight invite, not an account, and you can unsubscribe anytime.
Android? iPad?
iPhone only for now (iOS 17 and later). Android isn’t on the near-term roadmap: we’d rather go deep on one platform than shallow on two.
Can I practice with other learners?
Not yet, but that’s the direction. Conversation rooms are on the roadmap: places in the app to speak Icelandic with other learners, using the scenes you’ve already studied. The beta community will shape how they work, so joining the beta is the way to have a say.
