Privacy
Privacy policy.
Two parts: this website, and the app. The short version: the website sets no cookies and runs no trackers; the app has no account, keeps your progress on your iPhone, sends anonymous usage counts you can switch off, and sends your voice to a speech service only during a speaking exercise.
Who is responsible
The controller for the website and the app is Eyvin Studios AB, Vällingby, Sweden. Full details are on the legal notice. Questions about this policy: [email protected].
Part 1: This website
Hosting and server logs
The site is static and served by Cloudflare Pages (Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA, with Cloudflare Germany GmbH as its EU representative). When you open a page, Cloudflare receives the technical data every web server needs to deliver it (your IP address, the page requested, browser type, referrer, time) and keeps it in short-lived server logs for security and operations. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a reliable, secure website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare is bound by a data processing agreement; transfers to the USA rest on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses.
No cookies, no analytics, no trackers
The website sets no cookies and loads nothing from third parties: fonts and audio clips are served from this site itself. There is no analytics script, no advertising pixel, no social-media embed, which is why there is no cookie banner.
The beta list
If you join the beta list you give us your email address. We use it to send the TestFlight invitation, launch news and occasional build notes, nothing else. Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email or by writing to us.
Sign-ups use double opt-in: you get a confirmation email and are only on the list once you click it. Unconfirmed addresses are deleted after about 30 days. The list is kept with MailerLite (UAB “MailerLite”, Paupio g. 46, Vilnius, Lithuania, an EU company) under a data processing agreement; it stores your address, your confirmation, and which emails were opened. Your data stays on the list until you unsubscribe.
When you write to us, we keep the correspondence for as long as it takes to deal with your request and as far as legal retention periods require. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where the email concerns a contract or a purchase, otherwise our legitimate interest in answering you (Art. 6(1)(f)).
Part 2: The app
No account, your progress stays on your iPhone
The app has no sign-up and no account. Your lessons, your progress, your streak, your settings: everything is stored on your iPhone, inside the app’s own storage. We operate no server that holds any of it. It is included in your normal iPhone backup, and it disappears when you delete the app.
Purchases
Subscriptions are sold and processed by Apple through the App Store. We receive no name, address or payment details, only an anonymous confirmation from Apple that a subscription is active, which the app checks on the device. Apple’s own privacy policy applies to the purchase: apple.com/legal/privacy.
Reporting a content error
The flag button on an exercise opens your Mail app with a pre-filled message to us containing the exercise ID, the content version, the prompt and the answer you typed. Nothing is sent unless you send it, and you can edit the message first. We use it to fix the content and keep it as long as the fix is in progress.
Beta builds through TestFlight
During the beta the app is distributed through Apple’s TestFlight (Apple Inc., One Apple Park Way, Cupertino, CA 95014, USA; for the EU, Apple Distribution International Ltd., Hollyhill Industrial Estate, Cork, Ireland). To invite you we either email you a public TestFlight link, or enter your address in App Store Connect and Apple sends the invitation. While you use a beta build, Apple collects crash logs, basic usage statistics and any feedback or screenshots you choose to send from the TestFlight app, and shares them with us. TestFlight shows you exactly what it shares before you install. We use it only to fix the beta. The details are in Apple’s TestFlight terms and privacy notice, shown in the TestFlight app.
Anonymous usage statistics
The app counts two things so we can see whether its first minutes work: that the onboarding screen was shown, and that it was completed, with the answer you picked to “Why are you learning Icelandic?” (one of six fixed options: living in Iceland, travel, family, work, heritage, fun) and the app’s build number. That, plus the time it arrived, is the whole record. Nothing in it identifies you or your device.
The counts go to a small service we run at Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., see Part 1), which keeps them for three months and then deletes them. Like every internet request, the connection carries your IP address; our service does not read or store it. Nobody else receives the counts. You can switch them off in the app, in Profile under Anonymous usage stats. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in seeing whether the app’s first minutes work (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Speaking exercises
When you tap record in a speaking exercise, the app sends that clip through our relay at Cloudflare (see Part 1) to Microsoft Azure Speech (Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd., Dublin, Ireland), which turns it into text in Microsoft’s Sweden Central region, inside the EU. The exercise is then graded on your iPhone. Neither our relay nor Microsoft keeps the clip or the text: recognition happens in memory and is finished when the answer comes back, and Microsoft does not use it to train its models. Recording starts only when you tap record, and you can turn speaking exercises off in Profile. Legal basis: your request when you start the exercise (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Notifications
If you allow reminders, they are scheduled locally on your phone. No push server is involved, and you can turn them off in the app or in iOS Settings at any time.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask us for access to the personal data we hold about you, for correction, deletion or restriction, for a copy in a portable format, and you can object to processing based on legitimate interest. Because the app keeps no data about you with us, in practice this concerns the beta list and our email correspondence. Write to [email protected]. You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority, either where you live or to the Swedish one, IMY (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten).
Changes
We will update this page when something changes, for instance when the beta ends, and change the date at the top.
